In October 2024, CATL and Indonesia's IBC (a consortium composed of four Indonesian state-owned enterprises) established a joint venture for battery cell manufacturing. The two sides committed to investing $1.18 billion to build a battery factory with an annual capacity of 15GWh.
CATL has laid the foundation stone for a battery cell factory in Indonesia in collaboration with its joint venture partner, Indonesia Battery Corporation. The factory in Karawang in West Java is scheduled to go into operation by the end of 2026 with an initial capacity of 6.9 gigawatt hours (GWh), and will later be expanded to 15 GWh.
The government in Jakarta is developing these raw material deposits in conjunction with adjacent inland industrial processes, such as nickel processing, cathode materials, battery production and vehicle plants. In 2024, Hyundai and LGES commissioned a battery cell factory in Indonesia. Hyundai opened a vehicle plant in Indonesia in 2022.
The ambitious $6 billion Indonesia Battery Integration Project, launched July 1 by Chinese battery giant CATL and local partners, represents more than just another overseas investment — it marks a fundamental shift in how the world's electric vehicle batteries will be made, recycled, and controlled for decades to come.
This cooperation is part of a $6 billion new energy vehicle battery project developed by CATL and IBC in Indonesia, covering upstream and downstream businesses of the battery industry. In addition, all parties are currently discussing the addition of a photovoltaic energy storage battery production line to the factory.
